History and Heritage
1960
"Chabanel: The Heart of Montreal’s Textile Golden Age"
The Chabanel district, located between Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Meilleur Avenue, was at the heart of the golden age of the textile industry in Montreal, especially starting in the 1960s. At its peak, Chabanel Street was home to hundreds of fashion and textile companies, making Montreal the nerve center of this industry in Canada. This vibrant era helped build an international reputation for Montreal’s creativity and craftsmanship in clothing — a tradition that our artisanal knitting business proudly carries on today.

Late 1980s
"When the Machines Fell Silent: The Decline of a Once-Thriving Industry"

Despite its former glory, the Chabanel district — once a bustling hub of textile innovation and production — began to experience a steady decline in the late 20th century. Global shifts in manufacturing led many local factories to close or relocate. As demand moved overseas, vacancy rates along Chabanel Street increased, and the once-thriving industry contracted significantly. Today, while the area still houses some fashion-related businesses, many buildings have been repurposed or are undergoing redevelopment, marking a new chapter for a district that was once the lifeblood of Montreal’s textile scene.
2022: - to present day
"Reviving Craftsmanship: The Birth of a Specialized Knitting Studio"
In 2022, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many small businesses in Montreal were forced to close their doors. It was during this period that Houria Melbouci — a passionate knitter searching for a space to set up her knitting machines — crossed paths with an artisan looking to sell his workshop. The atelier, focused on producing high-quality knitted trims, was equipped with several industrial knitting machines and a wealth of rare, time-honored expertise. Seizing the opportunity, Houria acquired the business along with its unique know-how, which had nearly disappeared from the Montreal textile scene. By combining this traditional craftsmanship with her own expertise in knitted garments, she established a specialized knitting studio that bridges heritage and innovation.
